DISTORTED CITY
Design: 2018 Phase: Concept Area: 225sf | 21 sq.m Budget: $ Category: Art | Architecture Installation Using the existing ceiling conditions of the office building, an abstract installation addresses the issue that some contemporary cities are facing nowadays. The Distorted City is an interpretation of the exaggerated urban fabric that is dictated by the economic, real estate, and demographic factors, rather than strategic planning and inhabitants’ lifestyle. It is the City by numbers, not by choice; an artificial environment implanted in an imaginary place, with a fleeting relationship to context and poor consideration of the surroundings. It becomes too much piecemeal favouring options available, not options relevant. Design is reduced to a formula, calculating maximum profitability, using left-over public space as a bargain for a distorted scale of development. Distorted City is a city that is familiar, yet uncanny. It brings our attention to what can be lost in the wild race to the top as our cities morph into dystopian paradise.
